This month’s sung and unsung hero is Ian Thomas, a session drummer from London, UK, born 1963 in Cardiff, Wales, UK. He has played with Paul McCartney, Sting, Eric Clapton, Elton John and many more. Without a doubt, Ian is one of the UK’s most sought after and respected session drummers.
In 1984, he moved to London and joined the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. Since then, this versatile drummer has mastered a wide variety of musical genres from big bands to some of the biggest rock stars in the world.
Ian also has several credits for TV and film scores, and, for seven years, was the house drummer for the British version of “The Voice”. In July of 2007, Ian was part of the band that played behind Steve Winwood and Eric Clapton at that year’s “Crossroads Guitar Festival”, and in February 2008 he backed up Steve Winwood and Eric Clapton at New York’s Madison Square Garden. In May of that same year, Ian joined Eric Clapton’s touring band for dates in the Eastern U.S.A. and Canada.
